Healthcare Workers & Employment Permits

The Minister of State for Business announced in June of 2021 that Health Care Assistants will be removed from the ineligible occupations list for non-EEA European Economic Area nationals who wish to work in Ireland.

This will greatly assist the residential care nursing home sector.

If you have questions about employment permits, we will be happy to help.

Healthcare Assistants & Employment Permits

As a consequence of this change, certain job roles will be removed from the ineligible list, such as:

  • Healthcare Assistant
  • Social Worker
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Speech and Language Therapist.

Persons from Non-EEA European Union Countries who wish to work in Ireland in these occupations, can now seek a General Employment Permit to do so.

Here is an information on General Employment Permits.

Dieticians can qualify for a Critical Skills Employment Permit.

In order for applicants to quality for the permit they must have a QQI Level 5 qualification after 2 years employment in the state.

A minimum annual salary threshold of €27,000 is required.

The health care services executive intends to increase staff numbers by up to 16,000 personnel.

The critical skills occupation list and illegible occupations lists are reviewed twice yearly.
