Contract for Services Employment Permit

If you are a foreign national and non-EEA(European Economic Area) country national and working for a foreign company which has a contract with an Irish business and a contract arises for work in Ireland on this basis, this employment permit type may be an option for you.

The occupation must not be on the list of illegible occupations.

Contract for Services Employment Permit

Permission to work can be granted up to 24 months then extended up to 5 years.

At the time the contract between the foreign employer and Irish entity expires, or when the work permit expires, the persons permission ends and they must leave the state.

The worker must have been working with the ‘Contractor’ ie foreign undertaking for 6 months prior to the transfer to Ireland.

This work permit does not allow the person stay in Ireland for more than 5 years on a Contract for Service work permit.

If your contract is less than 3 months, an Atypical Working Scheme may be the appropriate application.

The contract for services work permit application should be submitted to the Department at least 12 weeks before the employment start date.

Details of the employer, Irish entity, the employment, services involved, reumuneration, the advertisement, if relevant, must be provided with the application.

Family Members

Family members, such as, dependants, spouse, partners of this permit type are inelligble for a dependant spouse/partner work permit. Such persons must apply for a work permit, such as, a general work permit.


It is imperative the employer is registered with Revenue and should be registered with the companies registration office also, if applicable.

50% of staff of the employer ie contractor must be EEA nationals.

Labour Market Needs Test

This test will generally need to be complied with although there are exceptions.

The employer has to meet this test by offering the role, firstly, to Irish or EEA European Economic Area nationals, which can be done via advertisements in a national paper, to the Eures employment network, and a local paper for separately required time periods.

Application Fee

Application fees are €500 for a contract less than 6 months and then €1,000 for contract up to 24 months.

There are also renewal fees.


If the person is from a country not in the EEA European Economic Area and who obtains this employment permit you will have to apply for a visa and register with immigration upon arrival in Ireland.

Residency Permission is different to a work permit.

You must also register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau.


All detail in respect of salary should be provided with the application.

A remuneration threshold of €40,000 exists.

You must submit your application for this work permit at least 12 weeks before the employment start date.

The contractor-employer must make the application and the application is made online on the Department of Enterprises website.
