Ireland Work Permit – Nurses
A nurse from a Non-EEA (European Economic Area) country cannot work in Ireland without permission granted by the Minister, unless the person falls under one of the limited exceptions.
The Atypical Working Scheme can be availed of by nurses from Non-EEA countries who have secured a positon of employment in Ireland, to obtain employment permission status. This permission type is of a temporary / short term nature of up to 90 days. This type of permit is only relevant in certain circumstances.
Permission sought for a longer period, a separate permit can be applied for.
Schedule 3 of the Employment Permits Act 2017 also lists nursing and midwifery occupations on the Critical Skills Occupations list.

Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
If you wish to practise in Ireland in nursing/midwifery as a non-EEA citizen, you have to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
The said Boards website at https://www.nmbi.ie/Home has detail on the Application Registration Process and qualifications recognition process. English language competence evidence will need to be provided. An English language test may be required. The N.M.B.I. provide processing time information. Undergraduate and/or postgraduate qualifications evidence, such as, the qualification parchment will need to be provided. Detail of professional experience post qualification will need to be provided. Management of the aptitude test is dealt with by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. This scheme can include nurses / midwives seeking to come to the state to conclude the clinical adaptation and assessment programme. This scheme can also apply if the person is seeking to come to Ireland to complete the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland examination.
The outcome of the assessment can be either your qualifications are recognised, more information is required or you are required to complete a period of adaption or aptitude test.

Employers must employ nurses and midwives who have been registered with the NMBI.
The RCSI Ireland also have an Overseas Aptitude Test and detail of the test can be found on their website.
Critical Skills Work Permit
Nursing and midwifery professions are permitted occupations on the critical skills occupations list. A nurse / midwife non-EEA person, unless exempted, can apply for this longer-term work permit.
Atypical Working Scheme
You should apply for this work scheme from outside of Ireland and obtain an Atypical Working Scheme letter of Approval before you travel to Ireland.
The fee for the application is €250.
The application can be made to the Department at https://inisonline.jahs.ie/
You must furnish identity detail particulars, passport details, immigration history, employment details, employer details, travel details, salary, nursing and midwifery number, detail of clinical adaption placement or the RCSI examination as part of the application.
Also, it is important you have ready colour copies of your passport, a letter from the employer to confirm the offer, detail of the job description from the employer, salary information, duration of the contract, a signed and dated Employment Contract, the approval letter from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, evidence of invitation to RSCI Aptitude Test or letter from employer regarding start date of Clinical Adaption Placement.
Working as a health care assistant is generally not allowed under this scheme.
Atypical Working Scheme Letter of Approval & Entry Visa
If you are successful in your application, you will receive an Atypical Working Scheme Letter of Approval.
When you are applying for your Visa, you should furnish to the immigration officer the Working Scheme Letter of Approval.
It is necessary to also apply for a Visa if from visa required country for permission to land and remain in the state.
