Employment Permit Home Carers

If a Non-EEA national wishes to work in Ireland, they must have an employment permit unless they are in the minor exceptions category.

The Department of Enterprise and Trade manages Irelands work permits system.

Industry representative bodies can make submissions to the government each year regarding skill shortages and labour needs per industry.

It has been announced on the 16th of December 2022 by the Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail that a quota of 1,000 General Employment Permits was introduced for Home Carers.

Such work permits, if granted, have a timeframe of 2 years.

A minimum annual salary of €30,000 for a full time role on 39 hours a week is required from January 2024.

Qualification recogition documents or evidence of a history of caring may be required for this application.

General Employment Permits

Applications are made to the Employment Permits Section, Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Earlsfort Centre, Lower Hatch Street, Dublin 2, D02 PW0.

The Departments application processing fees are €500 for a work permit up to 6 months and then €1,000 for a work permit between 6 months to 24 months. If the application is denied, then 90% of the Departments fee can be returned.
