Application for International Protection
A person over age 18 who has faced persecution in their home country, who has come to Ireland, can make an application for international protection on their own behalf and on behalf of their child who has not reached age 18.

Temporary Permission to Remain
While the person’s application is being assessed by the International Protection office, the person may obtain permission which allows the person to remain in Ireland while the application is being assessed.
The temporary permission to remain certificate should be given to the applicant within 3 days of the making of the application.
Statement
The applicant should be given a statement document explaining the application procedures, information about an interpreter, that they are entitled to consult a legal representative etc.
The applicant must cooperate with the international protection office during the application process.
Application
When you arrive at the airport or seaport you can indicate to the immigration officer you wish to make this application. This application must be made in person and a preliminary interview will need to take place.
International Protection Officers at the International Protection Office, 79-83 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2 will deal with your application.
It can take some time for the application process to conclude and obtain the decision of your application.
If you succeed in our application you will have a right to reside, work and have other rights afforded to you.
Dependant under 18
A dependent child who is under 18 can be included in the parent’s application.
Appeal
If your application is refused by the International Protection Office, there is an appeal mechanism, which has a very short timeframe, which should be on your notification letter from the I.P.Office. The appeal is made to the International Appeals Tribunal.
Refugee Status
If you can satisfy the definition of a convention refugee, which is defined as the following in S.2 of the International Protection Act 2015, you should attain refugee status.
”Refugee” means a person, other than a person to whom section 10 applies, who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group, is outside his or her country of nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of that country, or a stateless person, who, being outside of the country of former habitual residence for the same reasons as mentioned above, is unable or, owing to such fear, unwilling to return to it.
