Internship Employment Permit

This permit type is assist foreign nationals who are full-time students, in university in another country, but who are in Ireland to obtain work experience.

The person must be a full time student in a third level institution and you must have an internship offer with the employer.

The application is made via the EPOS system being the Employment Permits Online System.

The employer must be registered with the Revenue Commissioners and should be with the companies registration office.

Eligibility

The employee foreign nationals income must be the National Minimum Wage or higher.

The internship position should be an occupation on the Critical Skills Occupations List see here https://enterprise.gov.ie/en/What-We-Do/Workplace-and-Skills/Employment-Permits/Employment-Permit-Eligibility/Highly-Skilled-Eligible-Occupations-List/

It is necessary that at the end of the internship the person returns to their third level institution to finish their studies.

An internship employment permit can issue up to 12 months in duration.

Visa

If a person obtains an employment permit then an application to enter the state should be obtained if from a visa required country.

The person can contact the Irish Embassy before leaving to travel to Ireland about an entry visa. A list of Embassies is set out on https://www.dfa.ie/

Section 23 Employment Permit Act 2006

Employers cannot reduce remuneration or charge the employee a fee regarding the application for an employment permit.

Section 24 of the Employment Permits Act 2006

If an employer terminates the employment, the holder of the permit must surrender the employment permit to the Department of Enterprise within 4 weeks.

Application Fee

The application fee is €500 for 6 months or less contract or €1,000 for a contract up to 24 months.
